maroon outfit

Maroon has been tucked away and reserved as a fall color by so many of you. My hope is to show you that you can take those colors out of the back of the closet. Let’s make it work for the summer!

When thinking about summer in North Carolina I have to think about the heat and how that affects every outfit that I put together. The heat leads me to find lighter weight fabrics, materials that breathe and anything that will keep me cool! The star of this outfit is the blazer which ditches the full lining to opt for a more breathable half lined construction. In order to make this work for summer I had to lighten up both colors and fabrics where possible. The jacket is a lightweight heathered cotton allowing the fabric to breath. The color of the maroon is lighter than some other options and less deep in tone.

Below the jacket was a lightweight cotton oxford and a linen/cotton blend tie. All of these fabrics lend to a more comfortable summer day. As it heats up you can carry the blazer and as the evening cools off it can be your crowning piece.

Key points to remember if you are breaking maroon out:

(as a shirt, shorts, pants, or a jacket)

  • pair it back to something light in color
  • allow the neutrals to take the base of the outfit and let the maroon serve as an accent
  • balance it’s warmth with cool tones (Don’t wear it with orange, yellow other reds etc)

Maroon is reds sophisticated brother. It is darker, more serious and doesn’t claim the spotlight quite like red does. Don’t hide maroon away for half of the year, give it a chance to breathe this summer.
