So maybe you’ve heard that layering is an important way to bring dimension to an outfit. Maybe the image that layering paints in your mind is your favorite winter coat, over your light wool cardigan and heavy gauge flannel. Well there are ways to pull this style key into your summer without boiling under the summer sun.

1. Free the Ankle

Quick science lesson. Veins are the highways inside of which your blood moves throughout your body. Your ankles are one place where veins are very close to your skin and therefore allow heat to escape from the blood more quickly. With that being said, long socks are like blankets to your ankles. You may be terrified at the concept of going sockless, but you don’t have to entirely lose the socks. No-show socks are a great way to keep sweat from damaging your gorgeous shoes while simultaneously affording your ankles breathing room. Go sockless with your favorite jeans, chinos, and slacks for a practical yet stylish summer move. Going sockless with your suit remains a red-zone for many men, but with the appropriate tailoring this look can be a style power play.

2. Loose the sheen Charlie

A bright silk pocket square against a linen or cotton jacket is a stark contrast, and not one that I am too fond of.

Matte materials are key for accessorizing your summer looks. Grab some pocket squares/ties that are made of linen, cottons, or wool blends to bring an easy and composed look to your outfit. If it will catch the suns reflections set it away for evenings or when your more formal attire comes out.

3. Consider the construction

When thinking through your layering pieces you must consider its weight and construction. If it is a fully lined jacket you are bound to be trapping your bodies heat. Partially lined or unlined jackets are a go to during the summer months. The shape of an un-constructed jacket can also be beneficial to achieving a look that is both casual while still elevated.

Construction is also important when considering what fabrics you are picking. While cotton and linen appear to be the kings of summer, wool is the easily forgotten heir to the throne. Certain weaves of wool are not only light but very breathable and resist creasing unlike linen or cotton. A light wool suit can be the perfect summer traveling staple.

4. When possible go informal

Being informal doesn’t mean that you aren’t well dressed. It means  that you are trading out the heavily starched shirts for a softer relaxed alternative. Maybe you are switching up your footwear from the high polished tassel loafers for a sand suede alternative. A well-tailored pair of pants with an open collar button down is a simple summer look when executed well. I have also seen the return of wider leg options being paired with something as simple as a T-shirt for breathable summer fits.

5. Be intentional

Lastly, it is important to remember that while you cannot wear the same amount of clothes in the summer you can be intentional about how you are wearing them. Tasteful modifications to your look can go a long way in saying that you care about your style.

It may be easy to throw on khakis and a blue polo, but do you want to look like you work at Best Buy?

Consider the way you roll your pants and shirt sleeves. Consider the fabrics in your wardrobe, the textures that are in the shirt weaves, the patterns and more. A subtle thought about what belt or shoe you wear could be the difference between stylish and functional. Take the time to consider each small piece so you don’t look like every other mouse exiting the business office maze to sweat in the summer sun.
